I was able to get an advance screening to see Adam last Thursday. It was surprisingly very good!
It’s a Fox Searchlights film, which I find is usually either a hit (Little Miss Sunshine) or a miss (My Life of Ruins).
Adam is a delightful romantic comedy that experiences the ins and outs of a relationship with an added twist. It is about the journey of a love story and finding oneself. It’s also set in New York City, which is always lovely, lovely!!

The title character, Adam (Hugh Dancy), has Asperser’s Syndrome, which is a form of autism. He has difficulties behaving socially because of this development disorder, and he understands things differently than quote on quote “normal” people. When he gets excited, he starts talking about space. His assumptions almost cost him the beginning of his relationship with Beth (Rose Byme), his neighbour.
Beth is an inspiring writer who moves into Adam’s apartment building and has come out of a bad relationship. Together, we watch their relationship develop and flourish.

Since society expects everyone to act a certain way, Adam doesn’t realize he’s making mistakes, which allows the audience to laugh at his faux pas and awkwardness. He doesn’t understand a relationship between need and want… In the end, the ending was a bit unexpected but realistic.
It’s really nice to see a movie explore Asperser’s Syndrome. We hear all the time and know that autism exists, but a lot of the times people like to turn a blind eye or pretend it’s not prevalent. It’s really lovely and quirky movie. Everyone should definitely go see it!!
Note: There are still
free screenings to be shown on July 30 across cities in the US (and Calgary in Canada; the rest of the cities in Canada, the dates have already passed).
